Light the Community: Give as He Gave
Just as our Savior, Jesus Christ went about doing good, serving others, the Exhibit also wishes to do good and do more for the Elko area.
Beginning in 2012, an opportunity to give back to the community was added to the exhibit experience. From 2012 through 2017, the Créche Exhibit was pleased to partner with Joshua Tree Shelter in collecting items for the exhibit.
Unfortunately, the vision that Joshua Tree Shelter had encountered many obstacles. With sadness, in 2018, the Joshua Tree Shelter organization was dissolved before their vision for a homeless shelter in Elko could be realized.
Joshua Tree Shelter would work with Underdog Street Ministries to help distribute the items that were collected during the exhibit.
The exhibit is now just as pleased to partner with Underdog Street Ministries in collecting items for the homeless. At the Créche Exhibit those donations are focused on warm items to help the homeless through the winter months.
Underdog Street Ministries is passionate about helping the homeless, and has been serving the Elko area for the past 7 years.
Their mission statement is to help the chronically homeless in Elko with life sustaining needs ..whatever that may be. During the winter months that includes items to keep warm and in the summer months it includes things to help keep folks hydrated.
They also serve home-cooked meals twice a week—often times driving around looking for folks to feed, but transportation is an issue. They are currently located at Fix Auto; Friday at 5:30 p.m. for dinner and Sunday at noon for lunch.
Underdog is a 501c3 and looking for a building of their own to provide better services. There are many that they aren't reaching due to transportation, and due to only having a building during the weekend.
Some of Underdog Street Ministries other services are:
- Assisting those who are low income and in need of food and other items that they are able to help with.
- Identification, such as birth certificates, driver's licenses and such—when they are able to monetarily.
- Help with train tickets for folks needing to get home who have been stranded in Elko.
Their services are far-reaching, depending on the need of those they are trying to help.
Along with donations of warm items for the winter months, Underdog would love your help with their meals and transportation.
